NewZNew (Chandigarh) : United Nations recently launched a worldwide ‘Orange the World’ campaign against gender-based violence. Heeding to UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon’s appeal to “come into action whenever you witness violence against women and girls” a group of thoughtful individuals came together here today to sensitize people against domestic violence.

The initiative was taken by renowned tarot reader and divinator Renu Mathur, who has been a pioneer in spearheading a crusade against domestic violence, child abuse, acid attacks, etc. for the past 25 years. She was supported by famous singer-actor and youth icon Navraj Hans and Additional Solicitor General of India Mr Satya Pal Jain.

Addressing a press conference at Chandigarh Press Club, divinator Renu Mathur said, “As per the United Nation’s data, 50% rapes are committed on girls under 16, estimated 150 million girls under 18 suffer sexual violence every year worldwide.”

“The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report of 2012 reveals that upto 70% women experience violence in their lifetime worldwide. One in five women is victim of rape or attempt to rape. In India, rape is the forth most common crime against women. Young children, especially girls are at a higher risk for incest, abuse and abandonment,” said Satya Pal Jain, former Member of Parliament.

Navraj Hans appealed the youth to “respect women” and “take necessary steps whenever you see any woman or girl in crisis”. He appreciated Renu for launching a ‘grief helpline for women’ and continuously helping women in distress and said that he was happy to be a part of this cause and offered his ongoing support to her.

Mr Jain spoke in appreciation of Renu Mathur pointing out that very few people have continued such efforts for so long on an individual basis. Ms Mathur does her best to provide emotional, social and legal support to the victims in need. Mr Jain and Navraj felicitated Ms Mathur for her efforts in empowering women.

A group of volunteers led by Mr Sanjeevan, MD, Global Securex, helps Renu Mathur in this cause. Last year she launched a grief helpline for women (0172-5048788) which is gradually gaining ground. Women suffering any kind of domestic violence can reach out for help through this helpline or visit her office at SCO 354, Second Floor, Sector 9, Panchkula.
